We would look to remove a lump or bump by surgical excision, for example a mole. In some cases, a patient will want to have a mole removed for cosmetic reasons or it may be in a place where it is causing discomfort due to friction (eg. where a bra strap sits). If the mole is large, it might not be appropriate to remove it using electro micro surgery treatment (formerly advanced electrolysis) so surgical excision would be recommended.
In addition, we may occasionally decide that a lump, bump or mole looks as though it needs further investigation and here we would suggest that it be sent to the lab for analysis (histology). In these circumstances, the lump is surgically removed and sent away for histology. The results are normally returned to us within 5 working days.
Surgical excision is the removal of tissue using a scalpel or other cutting instrument.
Once it has been established that the lump or mole needs to be removed, particularly in the case of it needing histology, we will always attempt to perform the surgical excision immediately. If this is not possible, we can normally arrange this within 24 hours. The actual removal of the lump or mole normally takes no longer than 30 minutes.
The area immediately surrounding the lump / mole is injected with a local anaesthetic. Once this has taken effect, the lump / mole is carefully removed using a scalpel. Due to the local anaesthetic, the patient will feel no discomfort during the entire procedure. Depending on the size of the lump / mole to be removed, a few stitches may be required to close the incision but very often the area only needs to be covered with a surgical plaster which should be left in place for a few days to allow the wound to heal.
If you have had stitches, you will be given a follow up appointment so that a Nurse can remove the stitches and check that the wound is suitably healing. Patients are contacted to advise of the results of their histology within 5 working days of the lump / mole being removed.
