Laser Sweat Ablation Treatment

What conditions can be treated with Laser Sweat Ablation?

Laser Sweat Ablation (LSA) is a revolutionary new technique to treat sweating from the armpits.

About Laser Sweat Ablation

It was invented by Dr Guillermo Blugerman of Buenos Aries several years ago. Mark Whiteley of The Whiteley Clinic trained with Dr Blugerman in December 2008, performing several of these procedures successfully, in order to bring the technique into the UK.

Mark Whiteley performed the first laser sweat ablation operation in the UK on 5th March 2009.

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure is a local anaesthetic walk-in walk-out procedure with very low risks. It only takes an hour to perform in most people and there are only one or two 3 mm incisions on each side.

The Laser Sweat Ablation (LSA) procedure starts with an iodine test to show the exact areas of sweating in the armpit. These are then marked.

A local anaesthetic is injected into each side. A tiny 3mm incision is made through which the operation is performed - if the area to be treated is very large, 2 incisions might be made.

After loosening the skin of the armpit, a laser is then put inside the skin. This is fired, destroying the sweat glands. Once destroyed, the sweat glands are removed by suction.

The wound is too small for stitches and so a dressing is put on the whole of the area and a compression garment is worn like a jacket.

How long is the recovery time?

After 2 days the dressings can be removed. All wounds should be healed in 3 - 5 days.

Most people are able to live quite normally after the surgery, although it takes about 2 weeks to get back to exercise or heavy physical activity.

How successful is the treatment?

Unlike Botulinum Toxin (Botox) which is temporary, Laser Sweat Ablation (LSA) provides a complete cure from underarm and armpit sweating in about 70%-80% of people - although with the current modifications that Mark Whiteley has made, the results are approaching 100% success.
