In some women, the labia minora (the inner lips of the vulva) are enlarged. This can be due to genetics or caused by ageing or childbirth. The condition can cause many women to suffer a great deal of embarrassment which can affect their personal relationship and also limit the type of clothing that can be worn. Very often, these factors can have a profound effect on a woman’s confidence.
The area to be treated is first numbed, using a local anaesthetic gel. Once this has taken effect, the area which is to be removed will be anaesthetized again to ensure that any discomfort to the patient is kept to the absolute minimum.
Once numb, the labia are trimmed to an optimal length and shape.
The procedure takes around 30-40 minutes and although the recovery time is quick for this procedure, we advise that patients arrange for somebody to collect them as it would be inadvisable to drive immediately afterwards.
All patients must arrange for somebody to collect them. As there will be some discomfort afterwards, patients are advised to take things easy for a couple of weeks. The area must be kept clean and dry and exercise should be avoided for at least 2 weeks and intercourse for 4 weeks.
